Psychologist Catherine Deane (Lopez) is testing an experimental new device which enables her to enter the minds of comatose patients and attempt to ease them back to consciousness. When serial killer Carl Stargher (D'Onofrio) falls into a coma shortly before being apprehended by the FBI, Deane is persuaded to enter his mind in order to discover the location of Stargher's last victim, who is still alive but is in danger of drowning.
