American couple Daniel Mercer and Claire Bennett travel to Edinburgh to celebrate their tenth anniversary and repair a relationship weakened by work, secrecy and growing emotional distance.
Shortly after arriving, they meet Alistair Wren, a charming local historian who rescues them from what appears to be an attempted robbery. Grateful for his help, they accept his offer to show them parts of Edinburgh that ordinary tourists never see.
Alistair is intelligent, generous and seemingly well connected. He arranges private tours, secures reservations and repeatedly appears whenever the couple is in trouble. But every favor places Daniel and Claire deeper inside an ancient agreement involving a secret brotherhood, a sealed chamber beneath the Royal Mile and a supernatural presence created from centuries of betrayed victims.
The spirit initially appears to be hunting the couple. In reality, it is trying to warn them.
