The unflagging opportunities man offers us, to save ourselves from the inevitable descent into violence, leads him to a greater inner knowledge of himself: the knowledge that peace, as with the Kingdom of Heaven, is a constituent element of his true nature. The teaching of the Beatitudes provides man with the ultimate prospect of inner freedom as opposed to a situation of confinement and impotence, wherein he cannot imagine finding peace except through responding to violence with violence, force with force, and power with power.
