"Craw's" reputation for vice, violence, moral corruption, and unsanitary conditions made it a target for urban renewal projects, and the district was razed to make way for the city's Capital Plaza in the mid-1960s. Douglas A. Boyd provides a record of the vanished neighborhood and its culture, acknowledging the popular misconceptions about the community while also offering a richer and more balanced view of its past. Using oral histories, firsthand recollections, and accounts from "official" sources, Boyd constructs a case study that highlights the ways in which community memory is formed and demonstrates the importance of these memories to folklorists and historians.
