For whatever reason, the project will undergo changes over time,not just in the use of the spaces, but even in appearance. So thearchitect must have a Frank Lloyd Wright in the back of his/her mindwhen designing a project. It should be good enough to stand thetest of time, regardless of the computerized images which they feelcompelled to use to sway the decision of a jury or client. All thisassumes that architects can look into the future, and competitions areone vehicle that one might expect to show the way. In the past, theyhave produced pioneering projects, which have enabled us to see aglimpse of the future: the St. Louis Arch, Pompidou Museum, Bilbao, IITStudent Centre, Vietnam Memorial, BMW plant in Leipzig, Germany, aswell as many others. Finally, competitions have brought many architectsto the forefront, including Eero Saarinen, Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers,Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Rafael Vińoly, as well asscores of others who have given us a glimpse into the future. The bookhelps to illustrate the competition process, not only to achieve betterresults, but to open new vistas to us.
